The Penn State Altoona Rail Transportation Engineering (RTE) Program

To ensure rail transportation is adequately addressed within the Center for Integrated Asset Management for Multimodal Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CIAMTIS)LTI has enlisted the expertise of faculty affiliates with the Penn State Altoona Rail Transportation Engineering (RTE) program—the nation’s first and only Bachelor of Science degree program in Rail Transportation Engineering.

Collaborative research projects include: 

  • Civil infrastructure (e.g. railroad ties, ballast, subgrade, etc.)
  • Train-track interaction
  • Railroad rolling stock safety
  • Alternative fuel technology
  • Locomotive emissions and fuel efficiency
  • Data analytics for railroad safety
  • Railway network analysis
  • Advanced Material Research in Roads and Railways
