Commercial Vehicle Safety Summit examines safety concerns, statistics and regulations

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Representatives from the commercial trucking industry gathered at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Aug. 29, for the 2017 Commercial Vehicle Safety Summit. The summit was presented by The Thomas D. Larson Transportation Institute (LTI), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Pennsylvania Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC).
"Commercial trucking in Pennsylvania and the United States has an impact on all aspects of our daily lives," said Steve Williams, LTI administrative manager and summit coordinator. "The safety of truck drivers, other drivers on the roadways, and impacts on the nation’s transportation systems are all things in transportation research that need to be carefully considered. Programs such as this bring key stakeholders together in one room to discuss some of the greatest safety issues and concerns affecting the industry at this time."
With speakers including officials and faculty from the Pennsylvania State Police, Public Utility Commission, Pennsylvania Turnpike, PennDOT, Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration and Penn State, the inaugural summit addressed safety concerns, statistics, regulations and future mandates involving the commercial trucking industry.
Funding for the summit was provided through the Commercial Motor Vehicle Education and Outreach Grant.
