Session 4C: Developing Tomorrow's Transportation Professionals Today

Speaker Bios:

Patrick Son is the managing director of the National Operations Center of Excellence, dedicated to serving the emerging transportation systems management & operations (TSMO) community. While managing in the nonprofit environment during the recent boom of transportation technologies, Patrick has provided resources and knowledge sharing with transportation technology developers, researchers, operators, and stakeholders. Additionally, Patrick is a registered civil engineer with more than 10 years of experience, including transportation planning, design, operations, and construction inspection. Patrick is a graduate of California State Polytechnic University-Pomona where he earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering and a master of science in civil engineering with transportation emphasis.

Dr. Stephanie Ivey is the associate dean for research with the Herff College of Engineering and a professor with the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Memphis. She also directs the Southeast Transportation Workforce Center (www.memphis.edu/setwc) and the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute (www.memphis.edu/ifti). Her research includes focus on urban transportation planning, livability assessment in freight-centric communities, and strategies to engage citizens in the transportation planning process. She also has a strong record of workforce research and outreach, with particular emphasis on transportation workforce development, partnerships between industry and academia, and increasing representation of women in STEM. She serves as faculty advisor for the University of Memphis student chapters of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) and is a member of the ITE Transportation Education Council and the TRB standing committee on maintenance and operations personnel. She also serves on the Tennessee STEM Leadership Council and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Transportation Industry Council.

Stan Caldwell serves as executive director at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh of both the Traffic21 Institute and Mobility21 National University Transportation Center designated by the US Department of Transportation. These centers support faculty and students from across the university in technology-focused interdisciplinary transportation research and education. The research centers maintain a primary emphasis on deploying research and technology in the community, and work with public and private partners to use Pittsburgh and the region as a smart transportation test bed. Stan also serves as adjunct associate professor of transportation and public policy.

Robert (Bob) Koch is the department chair for occupational trade programs at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a professor/coordinator for the automotive programs. Bob is also the director for the Pennsylvania State Inspection and Emission Inspection classes at CCAC as well as an instructor for both more than 29 years. Bob is an ASE certified master automotive technician including L1, and a Ford Motor Company certified instructor with more than 40 years in the industry. He has instructed students on all facets of automotive repair to include diagnosing advanced vehicle systems. He is a member of the Alliance of Automotive Providers of Pennsylvania and a member of the Petroleum Retailers and Auto Repair Association in Pennsylvania. Bob is also a NATEF-certified team leader, who evaluates automotive programs in both secondary and post-secondary schools. Bob continues working with Pittsburgh Regional Clean Cities bringing alternative fuel training to western Pennsylvania.
